    Public hearing on Tarmac permit
    A hearing to take public comment on the draft environmental impact statement for the Tarmac King Road mine will be held at 7 p.m. at the Inglis Community Center in Inglis.
    The hearing is being held by the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers, the agency which drafted the report. For more information visit www.kingroadeis.com.

  • The Cedar Key Lions Club held its annual election of officers and board members for the July 2012 - June 2013 year and celebrated with an installation dinner on May 8.
    The Board of Directors and officers for the coming year are: Pam Oakley, President; Lannie Cardona, Immediate Past President; Steve Rosenthal, 1st Vice President; Dale Register, 2nd Vice President; Faye Sanders, Secretary; Sarah Cardona; Treasurer; Marvin Franks, Director; Bill Stephens, Director; Maurice Hendrix, Director, and Ralph Selby, Director.

    BP Settlement meeting set
    Information on the BP settlement agreement pertaining to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill will be presented by Rhon Jones, one of the 15 Attorneys on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the multi-district (federal) litigation. Jones, of the Beasley Allen Law Firm, will also discuss how to participate in this settlement.  Businesses associated with the clam farming and fishing industries may meet with Jones on Wednesday, May 30 from 4-6 p.m. at the Community Center in Cedar Key.

  • An incorrect date was publiched in the May 17 issue of the Cedar Key Beacon for the Bronson Home and Community Educators club's annual bingo

    The event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at the Levy County Extension Center. The cost is $5 for two cards and $1 for two additional cards.
    The club will provide drinks and dessert and there wil be prizes. For more information, call Dee Olsen at 486-2319.

  • The Levy County Public Safety & Hurricane Preparedness Expo, sponsored by the Levy Department of Public Safety, will be Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Williston Airport. Admission is free.
    There will be demonstrations of vehicle extrications using the Jaws of Life, and working dogs for Search & Rescue and the Sheriffs’ Office.
    Displays will include ambulances, fire trucks, helicopters, hazardous materials equipment, police cars, a medical simulator lab, and forestry equipment from several counties.

  • Levy County Delta Kappa Gamma Society assembled in Cedar Key to induct new officers and members.  

  • Rick and Patti Fabiani gave the Cedar Key Woman's Club a presentation on the Fisher House coming soon to Gainesville.
    And, after a short video on the foundation, there were few dry eyes in the clubhouse.
    The Fisher House, according to the organization’s website, is about “Supporting America's military in their time of need, we provide 'a home away from home' that enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time — during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury."
