  • Community Calendar for the week of March 5

    March

    Bluegrass at Manatee

    Folk and bluegrass vocal duet  Dick Staber and Judith Chasnoff. will perform March 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the amphitheater in Manatee Springs State Park, which is located near the canoe launch. Bring a comfortable lawn chair or use the wooden benches.

    This event is free with regular park admission of $6 per vehicle. The gate closes at 6 p.m. so please arrive early.  After exiting there is no re-entry.

  • Seahorse Key Lighthouse open Valentine's Day

     Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge will host an open house on Seahorse Key Saturday, Feb. 14 from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.  Enhance your winter visit by getting outdoors into the spectacular Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. Bring your camera, step up the stairwell to the tower, walk along the beach and take in Mother Nature.  Touch tanks and exhibits will be provided by co-hosts, University of Florida’s Seahorse Key Marine Research Lab.

    SRWMD Meeting

    On Tuesday, Feb. 10, the Suwannee River Water Management District's Governing Board will meet at 9 a.m. at District Headquarters, 9225 CR 49, Live Oak. The meeting is to consider District business and conduct public hearings on regulatory, real estate and other various matters. A workshop will follow after the Governing Board meeting.

    Empty Bowls Soup Supper

    Jan. 28 from 5-7 p.m. is the annual Empty Bowls Soup Supper at the Cedar Key United Methodist Church on Highway 24 in Cedar Key. This is a fundraiser for the Cedar Key food pantry. Take home a handcrafted bowl by students or by Amy Gernhardt, Cedar Key Pottery. Take out is available.

    You decide the amount you wish to donate for your meal and bowl.

  • Author returns to Cedar Key

     A Texas author is returning to her home away from home and will be promoting her book based on Cedar Key.

    Teri Mathis of Rosenberg, Texas will be at the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. to sign her book “Notes from Faraway Inn.” The book is a compilation of 14 years of journal entries made by guests and owners of the Faraway Inn in Cedar Key.

    Artist of the Month

    The Cedar Keyhole’s Artist of the Month for December is Harry MacLeod. MacLeod uses a scroll saw to create interesting and fun works in wood,  which include puzzles, small sculptures, animals, intricate scenes, tree ornaments and signs for the home. His works are primarily left in the natural wood state, but some are colorfully painted.
