Tax roll bills to be coming in the mail soon

It took an order from the Levy County Commission but the 2012 tax bills will be going out this week from the Levy County Tax Collector's Office.

Tax Collector Linda Fugate and County Property Appraiser Oz Barker asked the commission to consider a non-agenda item at the Oct. 16 meeting. The commission approved hearing the item 4-1, with Commissioner Chad Johnson of Chiefland (R-District 2) dissenting. He routinely dissents on hearing items not on the regular agenda. But Johnson did join in unanimously ordering the appraiser and collector to get the tax bills out to property owners after hearing their request.

Barker said his office was not able to certify the property rolls because two owners contesting his office's valuation on their property and would not be heard by the Value Adjustment Board until Nov. 8.

Because tax bills come due Nov. 1 and in order to get the discount for paying early, Fugate and Barker asked the commission to order the property appraiser to certify the roll to the tax collector so bills could be mailed.

“I like to have them out Nov. 1,” Fugate told the board. “If you get a tax bill 10 days before Christmas it causes a problem for families.”

Barker said on Monday that the property rolls were turned over to the collector's office on Friday and the appraiser and collector's staff were working on ironing out any differences in the two offices' computer software.
