Suwannee Valley Players is performing the play Barefoot in the Park on May 10-12 and 17-19.
Barefoot in the Park, by Neil Simon, was nominated for 1964 Tony Award for Best Play.
The play is about a young couple -- Paul Bratter (Greg Mercier) and Corie Bratter (Emily Baker) -- who are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He’s a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find, too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie's loopy mother, Ethel Banks (Diana Child) and Corie decides to play matchmaker during an upcoming dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic, Victor Velasco (Michael Zubler), where everything that can go wrong does.
Paul just doesn’t understand Corie, and she thinks he’s too boring. She just wants him to be a little more spontaneous; running “barefoot in the park” would be a start.
Barefoot in the Park was first presented on Broadway by Saint Subber at the Biltmore Theatre in New York City on Oct. 23, 1963. It was directed by Mike Nichols. This production is being presented with special rights from Samuel French.
Show dates are May 10-12 and 17-19. Show times are Friday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors/youth. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Suwannee Valley Internet in Chiefland.
