The Cedar Key Varsity Cheerleaders head to Orlando this week to compete in their first-ever competition. The Disney-sponsored Contest of Champions will be held at the Wide World of Sports on Saturday and will feature 52 squads.
“I’ve been wanting to do this ever since sixth grade,” said Jordan Watson. “Now I’m a senior and we’re getting to do it.”
The six cheerleaders that make up the CKS team, including two seniors, three juniors and one freshman, raised approximately $4000 through various fundraisers for the four day trip.
“I’m excited and nervous at the same time,” said senior Michelle DiMaggio.
DiMaggio and Watson, along with fellow cheerleaders Amber White, Aubrey Pope, Savannah Beckham and Lacey Coulter will leave for Orlando Thursday afternoon. Friday they will practice and visit the Disney parks. Saturday is the competition and Sunday will be more Disney before driving home that evening.
“I’m really excited,” said junior Amber White. “This is my first time at competition. I’m a little nervous, but I’m happy I’m going.”
The Sharks will perform a two and a half minute routine that features dance, tumbling, jumping and cheering. The routine was choreographed by Amanda Smith and her sister Alexis from North Carolina. “The girls added their own style,” said coach Mellissa Casto.
Good luck, Sharks. We’re cheering for you back home!
