The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has granted a request to open the state's scallop season two days early — On Saturday, June 29— made late Tuesday by Gov. Rick Scott.
The scallop season was scheduled to open on Monday, July 1.
Nick Wiley, the commission's executive director, issued the order for the early opening on Wednesday. "This action is taken in order to provide additional weekend recreational scallop harvest opportunities recognizing the importance of economic benefits to coastal communities where this activity occurs," Wiley said int eh order.
