Riders earn butts of iron to help seniors

A four-man, one-woman team consisting of Brad and Rebecca Groom, Dan Beyer, Bruce Bryant and Ron Cordes traveled 1,049 miles in 20 hours on Friday, April 12. The team rode the Iron Butt Association Florida 1000 to raise money for needy residents of nursing and rehab facilities.

The team left the Nurse On Call office in Gainesville on Thursday riding through the night to return on Friday.

The route took them to Interstate 10 east to Jacksonville, south on I-95 to Alligator Alley. They proceeded west on I-75 turning north through Tampa to Ocala. The team headed west and then north on U.S. Highway 27 through Chiefland and Perry to Capps. Once again they turned on I-10 then onto I-75 to Gainesville.

Weather was a big issue due to the cold front that was crossing Florida during their trip but they would not be deterred only slowing their pace to be cautious and stopping for one rest break just south of Tampa.

Funds are still being collected for the charity and they will be donated as soon as that is complete. Many thanks to all the citizens and businesses that donated to this worthy cause.
