Reflections: Thinking out loud

-A A +A
By Thomas W. Ivines

A friend and I were talking. Between us we have the world figured out... Well, almost.

We got to musing on the economy and how things are and likely will be in the near future. Housing is all but at a standstill, and fuel prices are still going up. What we figure, is things are not going to get better anytime soon.

Now I don't want to sound like doomsday, but we really are not in good shape in this country right now. Not only that, it's going to take a while to get back to somewhere normal again.

The upcoming Presidential election and the candidates, who are running for the seat, are scary to say the least. None of them have given a clue as how to fix the economy. All they have done is boast on how good they are and how good their past record has been.

It is a shame but it seems that oil prices and the availability of it dominate our economy. The high prices in the grocery store are a direct result of high oil prices. Not only does it cost more to produce food products because of the higher oil prices, it cost more to get it to the consumers, too.

The majority of our oil comes from other countries and unfortunately they are holding us hostage. We have no control over the prices and they are stringing us up by our necks. We are eventually going to strangle if something is not done soon.

And, too, there is more competition for oil than ever before. The Arab oil countries could care less if they sell us their oil. If we don't buy it, then someone else will.

I guess what I am saying here, is as long as we are dependent on other countries for the majority of our energy needs, we will forever slip into further economic decline.

So, what my friend and I have concluded is we need to wean ourselves from oil dependency from other countries and work towards self-sufficiency. We need to look to ourselves for our energy needs.

You know, we are not exactly the most popular country in the eyes of the world. The Bush factor has seen to that.

We now need a President who will lead us back to where we were years ago. We need a leader who will put us back as the great power in the eyes of the world. And, we need to become dependent only on ourselves instead of selling out. Yes, this country once boomed with oil and it made our fuel prices a whole lot cheaper.

We still have ample oil reserves in our own country, if we would just tap it. Get those right-wing environmentalists out of the way and we are back to self sufficiency again. Meanwhile we need to put in a whole hearted effort to overcome energy needs with technology. Oil will not hold out forever. If you think it's bad now, wait until we have no oil at all?
