Don't count on the dogwood and redbud flowers just yet. Even though some of them are popping out, they won't last. Another freeze is scheduled for this week.
Every few years we manage to have one more March hard freeze in North Central Florida, just enough to kill off any blossoms that have formed on fruit trees and other flowering fauna. And, that's not to mention the vegetables that will be wilting unless they're covered. You planted your garden early this year, right? I did.
History in North Florida shows there is a hard freeze every four years on average in the later part of March, bringing in the year's fruit crops late in the year. Some fruit trees do not bear at all because they can only bud one time. The freeze kills the first buds off never to be seen again until the following year.
A person once gave me a tip, so he thought. He said, "Plant your corn early this year."
I think the little corn shoots that just shot up are going to freeze this week. No way can I cover the whole garden. It's more like I will be replanting the thing.
I can give you a tip for this week: Chop some wood for the fireplace and cover your plants one more time. The weatherman says it's going down into the upper twenties. That means scraping off your windshield in the morning. The cold will assuredly put ice on your car's windshield-- What, no ice scraper? A credit card works just as well.
In the North, freezing weather during March is the norm. People who live there think nothing of it, but we southerners take freezing weather serious. After all it is hard to go from 80 degrees to freezing over night. The one consolation is it does not last. In a day or two it is summer like weather again.
I remember a dozen years ago it froze in March just after raining. The roads turned into a large sheet of ice and cars were sliding all over the place. Even me; I slid off the road and had to walk home. Luckily it was only a few blocks from my house. And, to think if I had slid into another car!?
Well, heed my warning. It is going to freeze one more time before the month is out. Are you ready? There's only four more days left.
