A Cedar Key bed and breakfast operator has announced plans to start a private bus company to serve residents in a five-county area.

Bill Phillips, owner of the Cedar Key Bed & Breakfast, said he is looking to privately fund the bus service. He is looking at purchasing coaches that have on board wi-fi service, television, restrooms and galleys to provide drink and food service to commuters and visitors.

“We are looking to stitch together counties to make this economical,” said Phillips who has been exploring the start of the business for more than one year.

“This will be very important to the rural community,” he told the Levy County Board of Commissioners at their regular meeting on Tuesday.

He said the busses will have GPS tracking so a rider will be able to check the vehicle's progress on a computer or cell phone and know when to meet it at a stop.

“I am planning on starting with a couple of busses,” Phillips said. He said he could envision taking riders from Crystal River to Gainesville and to Chiefland.
