“There is beauty at all stages of hair,” says Tina Williams who opened Tina’s Hair Design Friday to a busy schedule.
Located at 511 2nd Street, the salon offers male and female cuts, color, pedicure, full-body waxing, tanning and condition treatments. The salon is decorated in an androgynous classic red and black motif welcoming to men and women, the young and elderly alike. Iconic images of beauty such as Marilyn Monroe decorate the walls.
Customers can relax and enjoy a beverage of their choice in an atmosphere that Williams describes as “professional but laid back.”
A native of Cedar Key Williams boasts 15 years experience, working at Ambience in Gainesville. She graduated from Cedar Key School then attended Santa Fe where she received her education, training and professional certificate.
Williams sees her job as more than cutting hair. “As a hair dresser I’m kind of psychologist, friend, image consultant, and listener. I try to create a happy atmosphere even if it’s just for 30 minutes.”
She chose to open the business in town due to public need and family ties to the island. “The town needs a beauty shop. There is no hair salon in Cedar Key. I grew up in Cedar Key and it’s the place I wanted to raise my children.”
Williams is familiar with many residents and looks forward to getting to know more people.
“Some of my teachers are my kids’ teachers now. The same bus driver transports them. I’m looking forward to doing hair for people I know and getting to know people I haven’t met. I welcome everyone.”
Williams recognizes that the economy is challenging. “If I can make now, I’ll always be able to make it. To be able to start a business in troubled times is good for morale. I’m excited to bring something positive in times that seem so troubled,” she said.
