Jessie Short, an 18-year-old rising senior at Chiefland High School, was involved in a car accident two weeks ago, which has left him comatose at Shands Hospital and his family needs your help.

His parents, John and Ruby Short, live in Tampa but he stays in Chiefland with his grandparents, James and Patsy Hiers. His parents often travel from Tampa to Gainesville to be with him.

The morning of the accident, he was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 19 to work. A car changing lanes struck him from behind, causing his car to cross the median, striking a northbound vehicle and flipping three times before landing upside down, crushing the cab. He was thrown from the vehicle on the second flip.

According to family friend Michelle Pearson, he received multiple injuries and fractures, including a broken neck, back, facial bones, skull, ribs and both femurs. He remains comatose, but is responding more and more to commands.  However, he has developed pneumonia.

Short is at Shands and family is staying with him in the lobby. If you are able to help financially, please contact Drummond Bank in Chiefland. A special account has been set up to accept donations for medical care and expenses.
