Hello everyone. The week was nice, the weekend was not. Now let’s hope for a rebound this week and weekend – I would like to place that order now with Mother Nature and follow with a “please” and “thank you”.
The redfish seem to be showing their faces a little more here and there. But it’s never really good when your description has words like “a little more” and “here and there,” but it is better than the other ones I was using in past weeks.
The ones we are catching are usually good fish – to most, mid-slot which is 23-25 inches and healthy and super strong. We used artificial lures to locate and catch the fish. Sitting on a point with bait isn’t working as well as trolling and covering water. Scattered is the program lots of the time and is lost by sitting still and waiting.
The trout bite is still strong and big limits are still reachable and fish up to 25 inches came over the side rail of my skiff this last week. We had fish over 20 inches in every trip. We used bobbers and jigs with worms and plugs to get the best bite. All in all, we are in a full spring swing as mega-bait has moved into our flats followed by Spanish mackerel, blue fish and lots of lady fish.
We had the first sighting of a big shark this week as an eight foot bull shark ate a trout leader jig and all-in-one swipe. I’ve seen a few tarpon and Capt. Dennis Voyles had a trout fisherman hook a nice keeper cobia last week that measured 38 inches. So, finally, we are seeing a trend that makes sense and the fishing is well.
