The Cedar Key FFA added another state trophy to the ag room wall by placing second in the FFA State Aquaculture contest.

The contest was held at the UF tropical aquaculture lab in Ruskin.

The contest consists of six areas of study: anatomy and physiology,  general knowledge, fish identification,  recirculating systems, plant identification and a team activity.

Team members include: Kit Riley, Taryn Epperson,  Michael Shewey and Taylor Davison. Riley earned third place High Individual in the contest.

The team scored 838 points – just 20 points behind first place Kathleen. Sarasota-Riverview, Umatilla and East Bay rounded out the top five teams.

The team will receive its trophy on stage at  the Parade of Champions at the state FFA Convention in June.

The team is coached by Denny Voyles, ag teacher and FFA advisor at Cedar Key School.

“Second place is a great achievement, “ Volyes said. “Especially considering there are 360 FFA chapters in the state. I am very proud of these kids, we worked very hard at this”
