Fake smiles only last so long

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter in support of the column written by Kellie Parkin, “There's something wrong with this picture”  (Oct. 15). I have had the pleasure of knowing the family for a couple of years through the kids. I found her column on the League of Cities meeting to be straight forward and honest.  It is refreshing to read articles by journalists who write about the things that society tries to sweep under the rug. Racism, hidden or in the open, exists regardless of how we attempt to pretend it does not.  I was sad to hear that she received criticism for the article but not surprised. I guess those issuing the complaints about the article would think that welcoming my Uncle and Father into the dinner with the comment “Come on in Boys” was ok as well. Even though neither has been a boy for a while now. But it’s one of those things that you smile the fake smile to and ignore the ignorance of those who are too "old school" or "ole South" to think before speaking. Martin Luther King Jr. may have been to the mountaintop but the rest of society, even with an African-American president, still has a long way to go. In the eyes of God we are all of one family...maybe one day the time will come when we ALL see each other that way.  Fake smiles only last so long and they can't compare to the beauty of a real one.  Thank you for printing the article and I look forward to future articles by Mrs. Parkin.   Sherrie Schuler
