Don’t let the fireworks fizzle out this year

The spark is not out just yet for the Fourth of July in Cedar Key. Thanks to budget cuts due to declining tax revenues, the city of Cedar Key and CRA were not able to fund any special events this year, including fireworks for July 4.

Realizing that it is an important day for not only our country, but also our community, and despite the fact that ClamAmerica is on ice for this year, the Chamber of Commerce has stepped up to help. They are coordinating a family-style event on Monday, July 4 and the volunteer fire department has agreed to set off the fireworks, as in years past.

But in order to do so, at least $10,000 needs to be collected by early June, so that a fireworks order can be placed. Individuals and businesses around town and the county are donating or sponsoring events to raise money and, to date, over $6,000 has been pledged or donated.

If you can donate, contact Chamber board member Bruce Wilson at the Sunset Isle RV Park/Ada Blue Cafe at 352-543-5375. Checks should be made out to “City of Cedar Key” with “fireworks” in the memo field. In the event that enough money is not raised, all checks will be returned to donors.

If you would like to donate to help with advertising or other aspects of the event, please make out checks to "Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce" with “Celebrate Cedar Key” in the memo field.
