Last week the Cedar Key Beacon reported that Commissioner Scott Dennison voted against having the Community Redevelopment Agency pay for repairs to two sewer line breaks near Second Street and State Road 24 during an Aug. 30 emergency meeting.
While Dennison did not say why during the meeting, in response to a Beacon request he provided the following statement:
"I voted no for 3 primary reasons;
1. The Mittauer and Associates project manager confirmed this pipe was NOT included at the agreement of the Cedar Key Water & Sewer District within the City/CRA funded Phase 2 Street/Utilities Project.
2. There was no immediate public health issue and the CKWSD has the legal responsibility and the money to repair this pipe.
3. The CKWSD continues to double tax its customers with excessive rates to raise money and then also wants City taxpayer money as well.
I refused to make Cedar Key residents pay twice."
The commission approved the repairs 3-1. Commissioner Dale Register was absent due to a personal matter. Commissioners Sue Colson, Gene Hodges and Heath Davis voted for making the repair.
