CRA meeting notes from May 17

If it's spring, it's time for the City Commission's the annual “Dance with Supervisor of Elections Connie Asbell” regarding where the polling place will be for the upcoming year.

Traditionally, voting has taken place at City Hall. However, a couple years ago, Asbell moved it to the Community Center and the voters revolted. The power struggle between the city and the county ended with the commission voting to move it back to City Hall — despite Asbell’s protest.

Since then, she sends an annual letter to the commission requesting the voting place be moved to the Community Center to provide more space and privacy for voters. Every year, the commission, citing tradition, declines.

In other matters, the commission discussed and voted on the criteria for an advertisement for the position of city and CRA attorney, deciding to not spend the additional $140 needed to advertise with the Florida Bar, however, the position will be listed through the Florida League of Cities.

The Garden Club was given a certificate of appreciation for the hours of work and donation of plant material and mulch for the Veterans Memorial in front of City Hall. Club President Roger McDaniels accepted on behalf of the club.

Commissioner Heath Davis was absent, but the board went ahead with setting the June 7 meeting to re-organize and elect a mayor. It will be the first meeting after Tuesday's run-off election. Polling will be at City Hall from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
