CRA OKs Whiddon Ave. safety study

-A A +A
By Kellie Parkin

Last week the Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency approved a traffic and school safety proposal for Whiddon Ave., allowing for a field review of existing conditions. Hall Planning & Engineering, Inc. will perform the review and conduct an analysis of Whiddon, H St., 8th St, and Cedar Key School. The review is scheduled to begin immediately and will cost the CRA approximately $14,000. HPE will provide a written report of findings and present its recommendations for improvement to the city. In 2003, Whiddon Ave. school zone safety issues were identified, but funding to pursue a solution was unavailable, according to CRA director Greg Lang. “That school zone has been a dangerous intersection for years,” Lang said. “I pray everyday that people will be safe.” Lang expressed relief that the city is moving toward remedying safety issues at the intersection. “All of these (CRA) projects are important,” he said. “And this one is a really big deal - It’s a miracle that nothing bad has happened out there.”
