Two community outreach events, sponsored by the Florida Department of Children and Families, the Levy County Health Department and the Children’s Table, will be held on Saturday, July 31. The events, which will focus on local health and hunger issues, will be held in Levy County at the following locations and times:
• Inglis Town Hall, 135 Highway 40 West, from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
• Otter Creek Town Hall, 555 SW 2nd Avenue, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Nurses from the Levy County Health Department will conduct blood pressure and blood sugar (diabetes) screenings, while representatives from the Florida Department of Children and Families will assess eligibility and provide assistance with applications for Food Stamps and Medicaid. Volunteers from The Children’s Table, a local organization dedicated to feeding the hungry will be on hand to provide canned goods and other food items to eligible individuals and families in need.
“There are so many people in need here, especially in the most rural communities,” said Bill Brown, Director of The Children’s Table. “By teaming up with the people from DCF and the Health Department, we’re hoping and praying and working to get some of the needs met.” According to statistics compiled by the U.S .Census Bureau, 27.8 percent of children in Levy County live in poverty.
The group plans to visit and host similar community outreach events in all the communities in Levy County in the coming months.
