‘Art and Soul’ to be featured in February
The Cedar Key Arts Center is hosting show of mosaics in its Main Gallery and “Textiles 'Art and Soul' a Retrospective” by Sarah Westenberg in its Members Art Gallery through Feb. 24.
There is no charge to visit the galleries at 457 2nd St., Cedar Key.
State Fair opens today in Tampa
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida State Fair Authority are partnering to celebrate 500 years of agriculture at this year's Florida State Fair. The fair officially beings Thursday, Feb. 7, when Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and his fellow Cabinet members will "flip the switch" to illuminate the Midway in Tampa.
The fair's theme this year, "Discover the Fun," features a variety of events and activities designed to raise awareness for the commodities, innovations and people that make up Florida agriculture.
The department's "Florida Agriculture: Then and Now" traveling exhibit, part of the statewide Viva Florida 500 celebration, will make its debut at the fair. This exhibit is a fun and educational experience that conveys to residents and visitors the exponential growth and impact of the agriculture industry during Florida's 500 year history.
27th Spaghetti Dinner set
The Cedar Key Woman’s Club is preparing for its 27th Spaghetti Dinner, a winter tradition for locals and visitors alike. The dinner will be Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Cedar Key Community Hall on 6th St. A $10 donation will buy a wonderful spaghetti dinner with salad and garlic bread, with a selection of homemade desserts and iced tea or coffee.
The Cedar Key Woman’s Club was formed in 1960, and members volunteer at various community events, with proceeds from fund-raising supporting Cedar Key at places like the Cedar Key School, the Cedar Key Library, the Food Pantry, Another Way and the fire department. They also have been active in Support our Troops and in raising funds for Fisher House.
Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are available from members of the CKWC and at the Cedar Key Emporium. Dinner is available from 5-7 p.m., with a choice of dine-in or take-out. Dinner for children under 12 will be $6.
Library to sell Valentine flowers
Friends of the Cedar Key Library will be selling live Valentine flowers on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Jiffy Store on 2nd Street, near the post office.
Flowers will cost $15 a bunch or $25 for two bunches. All proceeds will go to support the Cedar Key Library.
Lions Valentine’s Dinner/Dance
The annual Lions Club Bring Your Valentine Dinner/Dance, will be held Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Cedar Key Community Center.
The event will feature a live band with dinner catered by The Island Room Restaurant. Tickets are $25 per person.
The event will also feature a silent auction and the event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available from any Cedar Key Lions Club Members.
Friends to present musical duo
The Friends of the Cedar Key Library will be presenting Patchouli – an exciting musical duo performing a concert of contemporary folk songs and instrumental Spanish-style guitar.The event will be held at the Cedar Key Community Center, 6th and F Street, on Thursday, Feb. 21, with a social hour beginning at 5 p.m. followed by the concert at 6 p.m.
FNCC to meet in Cedar Key
The annual meeting of Florida’s Nature Coast Conservancy (FNCC) will be held on Feb. 24, 1-4:00 p.m. in the courtyard of the Island Hotel, Cedar Key. The FNCC will provide grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, a variety of side dishes, soft drinks as well as beer and wine. The meeting is open to all members and anyone considering membership.
The FNCC is a charitable land trust whose goal is to maintain the natural wildness of our beautiful Gulf coast. The FNCC owns some land locally which it holds for the public in perpetuity and help maintain the railroad trestle trail in Cedar Key. The FNCC is actively seeking new members. Annual individual memberships are $15 and family memberships are $25. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a member of FNCC should come to the annual meeting and/or go to the website.
Chamber honors Citizen of the Year
The Greater Chiefland Area Chamber of Commerce will disclose its 2013 Citizen of the Year at its annual banquet at the Tommy Usher Community Center.
This year's banquet theme is “Happy 100th Birthday Chiefland” and the colors will be purple and gold. There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.
Reserved and paid in advance tickets are $25 each and reserved paid at the door for $30. Reservations can be made by calling the Chamber office at 352-493-1849 or with any Chamber board of directors member.
Children’s Art Benefit
The Children’s Art Benefit Dinner, Raffle and Silent Auction will be held at the Cedar Key Community Center (6th and F St.) on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. Gourmet food will be provided by the Island Room Restaurant and there are wonderful items available for the raffle and silent auction. All proceeds from this event will be used to sponsor art programs for the children of Cedar Key who have no art teacher in their school. Tickets ($25 per person) are available at the CK Welcome Center or from CK Art Center Board Members. Come join the fun and support a great cause.

The Levy County Farm Bureau is accepting applications for our 2013 Academic & Career/Technical Scholarships Award.
