This weekend

Flood Jam helps victims of TS Debby

Flood Jam, with three stages of music, an online auction of donated items and services, food and crafts, games and activities will be held at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak on Aug. 17-18.

Two-day tickets cost $40 in advance, $60 at gate and include primitive camping. One day tickets are  $20 each at the gate and camping is not included.

 The event benefits flood victims in Columbia, Hamilton and Suwannee counties through Love INC and the United Way.

School starts

The 2012-2013 school year begins. Drivers are asked to slow down near schools. Parents, please remember lunch costs a nickle more than last year.

 

Levy GOP monthly meeting

The Levy County Republican Executive Committee monthly meets at Bronson Restaurant starting with food and fellowship at 6:30 p.m followed by a meeting at 7 p.m.  

Come hear the current Republican leaders and candidates tell their stories, issues, solutions and more.  Get to know them, pick up materials and shake their hands.

Trenton hosts kids rodeo fun night

   River Cross Cowboy Church will hold a free kid's rodeo fun night with registration at 4 p.m. and events starting at 5 p.m. There will be a roping demonstration and the Chuck Wagon Team will serve a barbecue dinner with all the fixings. The rodeo events include: 3-5 year olds — stick horse race; Age 7 and under — barrels, goat roping and flipping, goat undressing and mutton busting; ages 8-12 — barrels, goat tying, breakaway roping, chute doggin', and calf flipping and branding. CK Chamber auction

The Greater Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce holds its Labor Day Auction at the Island Room.

This year's theme is Pirates.

Final Second Saturday concert 

The final concert in the Second Saturday series will feature Songcrafter's Circle featuring, Frank Thomas, Carly Bak, Jay Wood and Lee Paulet. Details on the event location and time will be forthcoming.

The concerts are fundraisers for the Withlacoochee Area Residents Inc., a non-profit group.

Stamp & coin show

The Florida Stamp Dealers and the Gen. Francis Marion Stamp Club will host their annual Stamp & Coin Show on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Circle Square Cultural Center at Top of the World, 8395 S.W. 80th St., Ocala. 

 Dealers will be on hand to buy, sell and appraise, stamps, covers, coins and paper money. There will also be a youth table that will provide free stamps and information for young collectors. For more information, call 727-364-6897.

SVP  opens “Cry of the Banshee” 

Suwannee Valley Players present, “Cry of the Banshee” by Tim Kelly. The play is loosely based on an Edgar Allen Poe story of the same title. In 16th century Ireland, a cruel Lord Edward Whitman seeks to destroy the "banshee cult" of a powerful witch, but she puts a curse on his family. Generations later, Whitman Manor has been moved stone by stone to America and the last of the family, a young brother and sister, seek to escape the curse. 

Performancers are at the Chief Theater on Sept. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23; times are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets will be available beginning Aug. 20 at our ticket location, Curves of Chiefland, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and at the theater box office Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 seniors, military and students, and $5 for children under 12. Join Women's Health and Fitness Expo

Save the date for the 6th Annual Women’s Health and Fitness expo, hosted by the Business Women’s Alliance of the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce.

This free event will be at the National Guard Armory in Crystal River, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

Sixty exhibitors and Spa Zone consultants will share information, offer screenings and demos, and show new products. Exhibits and experts will be available for heart health, women's health, hearing, vision, dental health, surgery, rehabilitation and physical therapy, home care, mental health, gastrointestinal and urological health, chiropractic, skin care and cosmetic procedures, wellness, vitamins, and a variety of healthy lifestyle practices including exercise, nutrition and relaxation, among many others.  

Walgreen’s will offer flu protection, free with Medicare Part B; if you have commercial insurance, check to see if it’s covered, or plan to pay a nominal fee at the event.

Scarecrow City opening

Scarecrow City, a project sponsored by the Greater Chiefland Area Chamber of Commerce, will open for the fall season at Trailhead Park on U.S. Highway 19 South in Chiefland.  The event pits businesses and organizations against each other in a scarecrow decorating contest. Entry fee is $25.

Haven event celebrates 

"Fall on the Prairie"

"Fall on the Prairie," a night of scrumptious food, live music, silent and live auction, and so much more will be sponsored by Haven Hospice at Whitehurst Ranch & Prairie in Williston. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.

The 43rd Annual Seafood Festival in Cedar Key will be held in the historic downtown and City Park. Great food and entertainment in the Park and art lines the streets of Cedar Key. Funds raised by various groups go to support charitable projects and Cedar Key School.
