The controversial issue of animal control is expected to be one of the topics discussed at length during the next City Commission meeting May 19 at 6 p.m. The May 5 meeting has been canceled, according to Mayor Heath Davis.

The current ordinance is outdated and in need of revision, said Chief of Police Virgil Sandlin.

The Cedar Key Police Department responded to five animal complaints of dogs chasing people or their golf carts in the first quarter of 2009, according to a report submitted to the city by Chief Sandlin. Other types of animal complaints have been on the rise as well, Sandlin said.

The discussion is expected to focus on dogs, but will include other animals as well. The commission will also discuss the possibility of implementing a leash law. This is something that has been in the making for a long time, Sandlin said. “I had hoped we wouldn’t need to do it.”
