Capt. Danny's Fishing report

By Danny Allen

Hello my name is Capt. Danny Allen I'm owner and operator of Southern Salt Charters, and hopefully your new provider of reports, stories, and photos for Cedar Keys backcountry and flats fishing.

I will also try to keep in touch with a few choice offshore guides for the low down in grouper town. Our inshore fishin’ has been what I like to call stable. Our redfish have been better than years before and our trout are hangin’ a little closer than normal. Seems all the rain may have helped more than the farmers, that's my thoughts. A little cooler water works wonders, sounds good to me.

Last Tuesday and Thursday I fished the same group with lures, only we did real good Tuesday – catch’n an’ releas’n 15 reds and a few trout. Thursday was a little slower. We had 8 fish – still a limit – but the fish did shrink, except a big 23-pound red caught by Corrie of Longwood, fishin’ CK for the first time. The smile on her face, yeah she be back to see us.

On Wednesday I fished a very strong couple from Jacksonville. They were at the better stages of a battle with throat cancer. We fished 2 hours and got 5 reds an’ some sharks and rays. Man, let me just say, the very kind words that she had for me was a great feelin’. One of those times you wish you could step outside yourself and shake your own hand.

Well, Friday was another cool day. I had a older couple that had moved to Florida 32 years ago an’ never been saltwater fishin’ (what I know that's what I said). We ended up catching six trout, four reds and six gallons of scallop up north aways. All fish were caught on topwater plugs.

Well that's all I got this week, so have fun, stay safe, take a kid fishin’.
